What is the time frame for recent exposure to HSV2

My girlfriend's doctor told her she tested positive for HSV2 based on a blood test. The doctor said the test results show she was recently exposed. I took a blood test and I'm negative. My question is what is recent? Could recent mean over a year? I'm trying to understand the time period she was exposed.

    Good question. Would have to

Good question. Would have to ask the doctor on that one. Really subjective to the person. I asked my friend that's a doctor and he said for him recent could mean anything from a month or so to a year since it's a fairly short time-frame. I'm happy to hear you're HSV2 negative. Make sure you always wear a condom and don't have sex when she is going through an exposure if you decide to stay with her. Obviously her doctor can't specifically talk to you unless she gave permission so you could find out his definition of "recent" so it really comes down to the do you believe her, which I know is conflicting, and if you love her enough to stay with her and make it work. Best of luck.

    Thanks for responding

Thanks for responding Matthew. To clear this up more...I'm HSV2 negative. I've been with my girlfriend for almost a year. The doctor said her exposure was recent so either she's cheated which she denies or recent can mean a period over a year. I want to know what does recent mean to a doctor a month or 6 months or two years.

I'm actually negative. The doctor said "recent exposure". We've been together a year so either recent can mean a year ago or she cheated and she claims to have not cheated.

    See my previous post. There

See my previous post. There really isn't specific time-frame. You need to have an open and honest discussion with your partner.

I was wondering the same thing. What is the definition of "recent" exposure?

Either of you could have had

Either of you could have had herpes for literally years--BEFORE you were together--and never had an obvious outbreak until now. Or, she could have had it and only recently gave it to you. Most people are either asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms that go unnoticed. The risk of contracting herpes from male to female is around 8% a year (that's an entire year of unprotected intercourse 2-3 times per week). If she had it say 2 years ago, she could have given it to you then, or she could have JUST given it to you. Or vice-versa. So don't freak--it certainly doesn't mean anything. Sit down and have an honest discussion about previous sexual partners, obviously she is going to have to let them know as well. If you are fearing the cheat card just having a positive test now isn't indicative of that.
