Exciting New Herpes Vaccine Could Provide "Near-Total" Protection

A microbiologist/immunologist working at an Illinois University has discovered a "near-total" genital herpes vaccine. He is currently preparing his results for publication in a scientific journal and applying for a patent on the vaccine, which has so far only been tested on mice. Unfortunately, several more years of human testing are required before the vaccine would be able to hit the market.

January 14 National "STIQ" Day in the UK

Did you know that yesterday was STIQ day? (a play on the idea of sexual intelligence or STI "IQ"). According to the day's founders, a month before Valentine's Day is the perfect time to get checked out for herpes, chlamydia, and other STIs.

Scientists Find Way to Stop Cancer Causing Activity of Epstein-Barr

The epstein-barr virus (otherwise known as human herpes virus type 4) usually causes mononucleosis. However, for immunocompromised individuals, it can actually cause infected cells to divide out of control and lead to cancerous tumours.

But German scientists have now identified what causes the virus to end its latency stage and become active again, which is the first step in finding a way to keep the virus in check before it gets to this dangerous stage.

STI and Circumcision Debate Still Rages

Usually the medical community manages to agree on a general course of action to recommend to the public. However, doctors are still divided about whether to recommend that parents circumsise newborn sons in order to avoid greater susceptibility to STIs such as herpes and HIV.

Cold Sores Can Give Someone Genital Herpes

It's a question we get a lot in the forums – "If my partner had cold sores and gave me oral sex, could I get genital herpes?" The answer is absolutely YES. The herpes virus can easily be transferred by skin to skin contact, and this is no exception. The only slight difference between having HSV-1 (usually cold sores) on your genitals and having HSV-2 (usually genital herpes), is that with HSV-1, the initial outbreak may be terrible, but subsequent outbreaks may not be as severe as they might be with HSV-2.

Getting STI Tests At the Beginning of a Relationship

I applaud the overall message in this recent Daily Mail Q&A about how to ask a new partner to get tested before starting a sexual relationship. It's a good idea and it makes sense that the person asking has also regularly been getting tested herself for years. It shouldn't offend someone if you yourself can be upfront and say what you have (or don't have).

How to Avoid External Cold Sore Triggers

While both types of herpes are subject to internal triggers – think stress, illness, a weekend of poor diet and/or too much alcohol – HSV-1 (cold sores around the mouth) can be especially vulnerable to external triggers because they're right out in the open. Luckily, once you know about some of these, you'll be able to protect your face from these outbreak triggers:

"Herpes Is Not The End of Your Sex Life"

This Q&A with Dr. Charlie Glickman is an excellent panic-reliever for anyone who recently learned about their herpes diagnosis. In it, he covers all the bases:

    - Stigma: "For centuries, STIs were seen as divine retribution against sex. But these days, we know that they’re caused by bacteria and viruses, just like colds, measles, and such. So I think it’s important to remember that herpes is just a virus. That’s all it is- it doesn’t mean anything about you, any more than chicken pox does."

Herpes Virus May Be Linked to Schizophrenia

Dutch scientists have found a direct link between HSV and the severe mental condition schizophrenia. They found that during psychotic episodes, patients simultaneously showed signs in the brain of an active herpes outbreak.

New Genital Herpes Vaccine Starts Human Trials

American biotech company BioVex has been developing a new genital herpes vaccine called ImmunoVex. In early testing with animals, the vaccine proved to provide almost complete protection from contracting both types of herpes (although it is targeted towards genital herpes) and also boosted the immune system against the virus. ImmunoVex is set to begin clinical testing on people in the UK this year.
