    Reader Q - False Positive on Genital Herpes Test

    Question:
    I was recently diagnosed with herpes type 1 and 2. I have a long history of herpes type 1. I grew up having episodes of facial herpes (the first time being inside my eye, but I have not had an episode for about five years.

    But I recently did a test and it revealed that I also have Herpes type 2 (genital herpes). I do not have any symptoms or outbreaks. My question is, could the result be false because I have the antibodies for the type 1?

    I've never had an outbreak or any of the symptoms of herpes, but yesterday my doctor called me after me having a pap and said I have herpes type 1 and type 2. She didn't even give me any info and didn't say what I could do about it. I'm so confused. I had no clue, I have NONE of the symptoms. What's the difference between being a carrier and having full-on herpes?

    I'd like to have another baby, but everytime I am fertile I get an outbreak. I had an IUD for a year and never really had outbreaks then. Now, I have had a menstrual cycle for three months now and get an outbreak everytime I am fertile. Is there anything I can do other than valtrex since I can't afford it with my insuranc    e?

    My friend has genital herpes and we were wrestling around and I touched his underarm which was sweaty. Can I get herpes from that? I am really freaking out... I washed my hands with antibacterial soap. How soon can I get tested for it?

    My sister who has herpes lives with my mother and my mother babysits for me twice a week. My two-year-old is potty training and I was wondering if he could get herpes from the toliet seat? I know usually this couldn't happen but he is two! Should he not be using the same toilet as her?
